Updated: Jun 15, 2022

It's important to consider which installation option is appropriate for your project before purchasing a hardwood floor. The two most common installation methods are Tongue & Groove and Click lock. The traditional method of installing flooring is tongue and groove. The tongue (machined projecting edge) is on one long side and one short side of the flooring planks, while the groove is on one long side and one short side (machined rebated edge). When properly installed, the tongue should exactly fit into the groove, resulting in smooth, gapless flooring. The floor can be secret nailed, secret screwed, or glued directly to the subfloor, or it can be floated over an underlay by bonding the planks together along their length and width.
